Le peintre et sculpteur colombien Fernando Botero naît le 19 avril 1932 à Medellin. A l4 ans, son père meurt, son oncle l’élève avec sa mère et il se concentre sur le dessin, la peinture et participe à quelques expositions. Après ses études, il s’installe à Madrid, Paris puis Florence, et découvre Titien, Tintoret, Vélasquez et Goya. Il vit à Mexico où les murales de Rivera et Orozco l’impressionnent. De 1960, il passe 13 années à NY mais reste fidèle à l’imagerie de sa Colombie natale. Son style est marqué par la rondeur de ses personnages, parfois obèses qui célèbrent le plaisir de la chair et de la volupté. Pour lui, le volume, c'est magique, sensuel, la beauté et l’amour. Il est l'un des grands de la fin du siècle.

The Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero was born on April 19, 1932 in Medellin. At the age of 14, his father died, his uncle raised him with his mother and he concentrated on drawing, painting and participated in some exhibitions. After his studies, he moved to Madrid, Paris and Florence, and discovered Titian, Tintoretto, Vélasquez and Goya. He lived in Mexico City where the murals of Rivera and Orozco impressed him. From 1960, he spent 13 years in NY but remained faithful to the imagery of his native Colombia. His style is marked by the roundness of his characters, sometimes obese who celebrate the pleasure of flesh and voluptuousness. For him, volume is magic, sensual, beauty and love. He is one of the great masters of painting of the end of the century.
