La peintre portoricaine Myrna Baez naît le 18 août 1931 à San Juan. Licenciée en Sciences de l'Université de Porto Rico en 1951, elle se rend à Madrid pour étudier la médecine et entre aussi à l'Académie de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. De retour à Porto Rico en 1959, elle rejoint l'atelier d'arts graphiques de l'Institut de la culture et est apprentie du maestro Lorenzo Homar. Elle étudie au « Pratt Graphics Center » de NY et enseigne à l’université du Sacré Coeur et à « l'Art Students League » de San Juan. Graveuse, enseignante et artiste en résidence à l'Université, elle reçoit un doctorat honorifique en 2000. Grande coloriste, Báez est connue pour son intense souci de la lumière dans sa description d'ambiguës, d’espaces intérieurs qui superposent et fusionnent le paysage et la figure humaine. Elle meurt le 24 septembre 2018 à Hato Rey.
The puertorican painter Myrna Baez was born on august 18 1931, in San Juan. Bachelor of Sciences from the University of PR in 1951, she went to Madrid to study medicine. She entered the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Back to Puerto Rico in 1959, she joined the Graphic Arts Workshop at the Institute of Culture and became an apprentice to maestro Lorenzo Homar. She also studied at the Pratt Graphics Center in New York and taught at Sacred Heart University and at the Art Students League of San Juan. Engraver, teacher, member of Graphic Artists Association of Puerto Rico and artist-in-residence at the Sacred Heart University, she was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2000. Great colorist, Báez is known for her intense concern for light in her depiction of ambiguous interior spaces that layer and merge the landscape and the human figure. She died september 24, 2018 in Hato Rey.
