Le peintre américain John French Sloan nait le 2 août 1871 à Lock Haven, Pennsylvanie et est connu pour la vitalité de ses représentations de la vie quotidienne à NY. Il est artiste d’un journal commercial à Philadelphie. À NY en 1908, il expose avec le groupe « The Eight ». Ses peintures sont réalistes du genre urbain. Il enseigne par intermittence et, intéressé par la réforme sociale, fait des illustrations pour un périodique socialiste. Sa meilleure période est de 1900 à 1920. Ses tableaux sont surtout des portraits sympathiques d'hommes et de femmes. Parfois, Il donne une note satirique aiguë à son travail. Tard dans la vie, Sloan retourna aux motifs Art Nouveau. Il meurt le 7 septembre 1951 à Hanover au New Hampshire.

He is a commercial newspaper artist in Philadelphia. In NY in 1908, he exhibited with the group "The Eight". His paintings are realistic of the urban genre. He teaches intermittently and, interested in social reform, does illustrations for a socialist periodical. His best period is from 1900 to 1920. His paintings are mostly sympathetic portraits of men and women. Sometimes He gives a sharp satirical note to his work. Late in life, Sloan returned to Art Nouveau motifs. He died on September 7, 1951 in Hanover, New Hampshire.
