WILLIAM LESTER STEVENS
Le peintre paysagiste américain William Lester Stevens est né à Rockport, MA, en 1888. Il a étudié avec Parker S. Perkins à Rockport et en Europe après la Première Guerre mondiale. Il quitta Rockport en 1934 pour l'ouest du Massachusetts. Il s'installa à Conway en 1944 et devint professeur de peinture. Surnommé "Steve", il était considéré comme excentrique et compulsif pour peindre en plein air tous les jours. Il a produit environ 5 000 peintures à Boston et à Princeton dont des centaines qu’il a détruit. Il dirigea une école d’art d’été à Grand Manan dans les années 1930 et amena ses élèves à Asheville, NC, New Orleans, Charleston SC, Québec et à Gaspé au Canada. Il mourut à Greenfield (MA) en 1969.

American landscape painter William Lester Stevens was born in Rockport, MA, in 1888. He studied with Parker S. Perkins in Rockport and in Europe after the First World War. He left Rockport in 1934 for western Massachusetts. He moved to Conway in 1944 and became a painting teacher. Nicknamed "Steve", he was considered eccentric and compulsive to paint outdoors every day. He produced about 5,000 paintings in Boston and Princeton, hundreds of which he destroyed. He ran a summer art school in Grand Manan in the 1930s and brought his students to Asheville, NC, New Orleans, Charleston SC, Quebec, and Gaspé, Canada. He died in Greenfield (MA) in 1969.
