Le peintre français Henri Gascar naît à Paris. En 1659, il fait son premier voyage à Rome. En 1667, il exécute son portrait de Nicolas Delafond, journaliste d'Amsterdam. Le caractère informel de la pose et la simplicité de l'expression rappellent les portraits hollandais contemporains. En 1672, son portrait de Louis de Bourbon est rejeté par l'Académie Royale. Il part pour l'Angleterre en 1674. A Londres, au cours de cette période, il peint le double portrait de Lord Lisle et Dorothy Sidney. Son œuvre la plus étonnante est le portrait de James, duc d'York, en tant que Lord High Admiral. Plus tard, le duc est présenté en armure romaine à la manière de Louis XIV. Gascar revient à Paris et est élu membre de l'Académie royale le 26 octobre 1680. Il se rend ensuite à Rome, où il meurt le 1er janvier 1701, à l'âge de 66 ans.

The French painter Henri Gascar was born in Paris. In 1659 he made his first trip to Rome. In 1667, he painted the portrait of Nicolas Delafond. journalist from Amsterdam. The informal nature of the pose and the simplicity of the expression are reminiscent of contemporary Dutch portraits. In 1672, his portrait of Louis de Bourbon was rejected by the Royal Academy. He left for England in 1674. In London, during this period, he painted the double portrait of Lord Lisle and Dorothy Sidney. His most amazing work is the portrait of James, Duke of York, as Lord High Admiral. Later, the duke is presented in Roman armor in the manner of Louis XIV. Gascar returned to Paris and was elected member of the Royal Academy on October 26, 1680. He then went to Rome, where he died on January 1, 1701, at the age of 66.
