Le peintre norvégien Christian Krohg naît le 13 août 1852 à Oslo. Étudiant en droit à l'Université de Christiania, il fréquente l'école d'art privée Johan Eckersberg, puis l’École Royale de dessin. En 1875, il est à l'Akademie de Berlin, rencontre Émile Zola et vit dans une grande pauvreté en entamant sa carrière de portraitiste. Krohg visite Skagen maintes fois et est influencé par la colonie d'artistes. En 1881, Il gagne une bourse d'État à Paris. Influencé par Manet, Krogh rejoint le mouvement impressionniste. En 1884, il gagne le concours pour exposer un tableau à l'Expo de Chicago 1893. Jusqu’en 1909, Krohg vit à Paris, enseigne à l'Académie Colarossi et est directeur de l’Académie de peinture et de sculpture. Il meurt le 16 octobre 1925 à Oslo.

The Norwegian painter Christian Krohg was born on August 13, 1852 in Oslo. A law student at the University of Christiania, he attended the private art school Johan Eckersberg, then the Royal School of Drawing. In 1875, he was at the Akademie in Berlin, met Émile Zola and lived in great poverty when he began his career as a portrait painter. He visits Skagen many times and is influenced by the Artist Colony. In 1881, he won a state grant in Paris. Influenced by Manet, he joined the Impressionist movement. In 1884, he won the competition to exhibit a painting at the 1893 Chicago Expo. Until 1909, he lived in Paris, taught at the Colarossi Academy and was director of the Academy of Painting and Sculpture. He died on October 16, 1925 in Oslo.
