Le peintre romantique allemand Caspar David Friedrich nait le 5 septembre 1774 à Greifswald Pommern. Il fréquente, à partir de 1794, la Royale Académie d'Art de Copenhague. En 1798, il est à Dresde. En 1810, il vient membre de l'Académie de Berlin et, en 1816, de celle de Dresde. Le tsar Nicholas lui commanda des travaux, avant qu'il devienne très malade et qu'il doive arrêter la peinture en 1835. Il meurt le 7 mai 1840 à Dresde et tombe dans l'oubli. Au début du XXème siècle, on s'intéressa à nouveau à son œuvre. Friedrich compte parmi les plus importants peintres romantiques allemands. Il appréciait l'idéal de cette période artistique dans son expression pleine de sentiments et de réalisme.

German romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich was born on September 5, 1774 in Greifswald Pommern. From 1794, he attended the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen. In 1798, he was in Dresden. In 1810, he became a member of the Academy of Berlin and, in 1816, of that of Dresden. Tsar Nicholas commissioned work from him, before he became very ill and had to stop painting in 1835. He died on May 7, 1840 in Dresden and fell into oblivion. At the beginning of the twentieth century, there was renewed interest in his work. Friedrich is one of the most important German romantic painters. He appreciated the ideal of this artistic period in its expression full of feelings and realism.
