Henri Matisse, peintre, sculpteur et graveur français, artiste important du XXe siècle est une figure majeure du fauvisme. Il a pratiqué un art monumental et décoratif, réalisant des œuvres novatrices. Né en 1869, Il grandit à 200 km au N-E de Paris. À 18 ans, il veut être avocat mais abandonne et s’inscrit à l’Académie Julian en 1891. Un an plus tard, il entre aux Beaux-Arts. À 26 ans, il expose 5 tableaux. Après son succès, il étudie les Impressionnistes. Le Cubisme devient le principal mouvement et il en publie les principes fondamentaux. En 1925, Il adopte le nu féminin. Sa popularité s’envole. En 1930, il reçoit deux commandes importantes: une pour un recueil de poèmes de Mallarmé et l’autre la décoration murale du hall principal de la Fondation Barnes en Pennsylvanie. En 1941, il est cloué dans une chaise roulante par un cancer. Matisse a redéfini la peinture du XXe siècle.

Henri Matisse, French painter, sculptor and engraver, important artist of the 20th century, is a major figure of Fauvism. He practiced monumental and decorative art, producing innovative works. Born in 1869, he grew up 200 km northeast of Paris. At 18, he wanted to be a lawyer but gave up and enrolled at the Académie Julian in 1891. A year later, he entered the Beaux-Arts. At 26, he exhibited 5 paintings. After his success, he studied the Impressionists. Cubism becomes the main movement and he publishes its fundamental principles. In 1925, he adopts the female nude. His popularity soares. In 1930, he receives two major commissions: one for a collection of poems by Mallarmé and the other for the wall decoration of the main hall of the Barnes Foundation in Pennsylvania. In 1941, he is stuck in a wheelchair by cancer. Matisse redefined 20th century painting.
